US and UK Impose New Sanctions on Iran Following Attack on Israel
In response to Iran’s recent missile and drone attack on Israel, the United States and the United Kingdom have imposed new sanctions on Iran. The attack, which heightened tensions in the Middle East, prompted swift action from both Western powers.
The US Treasury Department announced sanctions against more than a dozen individuals and two entities involved in Iran’s drone program. These sanctions target executives at Mado Company, a manufacturer producing engines for Iran’s Shahed-131 and Shahed-136 drones, both reportedly used in the attack on Israel.
Additionally, the UK announced sanctions against individuals and entities involved in Iran’s UAV and ballistic missile industries, including the General Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces and the IRGC Navy.
President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak both emphasized their commitment to Israel’s security and condemned Iran’s behavior. President Biden directed the US Treasury to continue imposing sanctions to degrade Iran’s military industries.
European Union leaders have also vowed to ramp up sanctions on Iran, targeting its drone and missile deliveries to proxies in Gaza, Yemen, and Lebanon. However, they also urged restraint from Israel to avoid further escalation in the region.
Iran, meanwhile, has threatened retaliation against Israeli nuclear sites if Israel strikes its nuclear facilities. The situation remains tense, with fears of a wider conflict looming in the Middle East.
The effectiveness of sanctions in deterring Iran’s aggressive actions and preventing further escalation remains uncertain. However, Western powers continue to assert their commitment to holding Iran accountable for its destabilizing actions in the region.
