Lucy Letby Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Tragic Murder of Seven Infants
For the death of seven newborns and the attempted murder of another six, British nurse Lucy Letby was found guilty and handed a life sentence.
According to reports, Lucy Letby declined to show up for the hearing and did not want to see it remotely from jail.
On Monday, Judge Justice Gross remarked, “You acted in a way that was completely contrary to the normal human instincts of nurturing and caring for babies. “The smallest and most defenseless children were targeted in this vicious, calculating, and cynical operation of child murder.
In a case that shocked the nation and established Letby as Britain’s most active child serial murderer in recent memory, the jury found her guilty on Friday. Letby has been on trial since October.
Letby had consistently denied hurting the kids. However, during their search of her residence, the police discovered hospital records and a handwritten note on which Letby had penned the words “I am evil, I did this.”
Letby attempted to explain the note by claiming that she wrote it after being assigned to administrative tasks in the wake of the deaths of the two twins, and that four senior doctors were trying to put the blame on her.
While employed as a nurse in the neonatal section of the Countess of Chester Hospital in northern England between 2015 and 2016, the 33-year-old killed the infants by overfeeding them with milk, poisoning them with insulin, or injecting them with air.
“I’m not worthy of life. She wrote in one memo, “I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough to care for them,” and in another, “I am a terrible evil person,” adding in big letters, “I am evil I did this.”
Before Friday’s sentencing, Letby’s victims’ families had the opportunity to address the court about the effects of his heinous deeds.

Dr. Nigel Scawn, Medical Director at the Countess of Chester Hospital, released a statement on Friday saying, “We are extremely sorry that these crimes were committed at our hospital and our thoughts continue to be with all the families and loved ones of the babies who came to harm or died.”
Letby was twice detained by police in connection with their probe in 2018 and 2019, according to PA. In November 2020, she was detained once more.
