What Man City’s victory over Tottenham means for Arsenal and the title race

Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Tottenham has left Arsenal needing a miracle on the final day of the Premier League season to clinch the title.

Victory for Pep Guardiola’s side on Tuesday night means they now sit at the top of the table on 88 points, two clear of second-placed Arsenal on 86.

The only way Arsenal can clinch their first top-flight trophy in 20 years is if City drop points in their final match against West Ham on Sunday.

If underdogs West Ham beat City at the Etihad, Arsenal will be crowned champions as long as they defeat Everton at the Emirates in their last fixture

If Arsenal fail to pick up three points against the Toffees, City will win the title no matter what.

Should City and West Ham draw, it is possible for Arsenal to win the title on goal difference as long as they record a win over Everton.

Arsenal currently have a goal difference of +61, which is one more than City’s +60, giving Mikel Arteta’s men the advantage if West Ham secure a point at the Etihad.

But City’s fate is now firmly in their own hands in what could possibly be another incredibly painful ending to the season for Arsenal.

West Ham boss David Moyes was recently quizzed about their upcoming clash against City and said: ‘It would be difficult stopping their U14’s winning the title!

‘I’ve said to the players we’ll do everything to be professional – that’s the word I would use. We’ll try and do the best we can.’

Arsenal narrowly missed out on last season’s Premier League trophy despite topping the table for 248 days – the most for a team who failed to win the title in English top-flight history – as a late capitulation saw City come out on top.

Guardiola’s side have won the Premier League title five times across the last six seasons, with Liverpool the only side to stop them in the 2019-20 campaign.

City, who clinched a famous treble last term, are attempting to land the English top-flight trophy for the 10th time in their history.
