Newcastle United handed Manchester City their first defeat of the season by a goal to none in an epic Carabao cup fifth round match at the St James park on Wednesday.
Manchester City started the match without their star striker Erling Haaland who happened to be left on the bench by their manager Pep Guardiola in both halves.
Newcastle took the lead through their swedish striker Alexander Isak in the 53rd minute and managed to hold on the remainder of the minutes for the win.
This was the Magpies first victory over City in any competition in 11 encounters.
Manchester City controlled most of the game but were unable to score aganist the outstanding Newcastle goal keeper Nick Pope who made massive saves in both halves to deny the attacking City players.
Newcastle who lost to Manchester United in the Carabao cup final last year will face Manchester United in the fourth round of the Carabao cup.
This was Manchester City’s first loss of the season and will look to bounce back when they face Wolverhampton Wanderers away in the English Premier league on Saturday evening.
This was Manchester City’s third consecutive early exit in the Carabao Cup competition after being eliminated by Southampton Fc in 2022 and Westham United in 2021.
Elsewhere Chelsea scored their first goal of the month thanks to Nicolas Jackson strike early in the second half thanks to a lovely assist from former Manchester City player Cole Palmer who was signed by the blues in the closed transfer window, to ease past Brighton 1-0 in the Carabao Cup fifth round.
Chelsea had suffered defeat over the weekend to Aston Villa in the Premier league and had played three games without scoring a single goal.
Chelsea will face Championship club Blackburn at the Stamford Bridge in the fourth round of the Carabao cup.
