Ecuadorian Soccer Star Marco Angulo Dies After Month-Long Battle Following Car Crash
Marco Angulo, the talented Ecuadorian international midfielder, has tragically passed away at the age of 22, following injuries sustained in a car crash last month. The player, who was on loan from Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati to Liga de Quito, died on Monday night after spending over a month in intensive care.
The car crash occurred on October 7 when the vehicle Angulo was traveling in crashed into a metal barrier on the highway. Angulo’s teammate, Roberto Cabezas, and a friend, Victor Carcopa, died at the scene. Two other passengers survived but their condition remains unknown.
Both FC Cincinnati and Liga de Quito expressed their deep sorrow following the player’s passing. “It is with deep pain and sadness that we inform you of the death of our beloved Marco Angulo,” Liga de Quito said in a statement. “His departure is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts.”
The Ecuadorian Football Federation also paid tribute to Angulo, highlighting his commitment to representing his country with dedication and skill. “Marco was not only an outstanding player but also a great teammate. He leaves a deep sorrow in our hearts,” the Federation said. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time.”
FC Cincinnati, the club where Angulo had been playing since 2023, expressed their heartbreak over the loss of a beloved player and friend. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Marco – a husband, father, brother, son, friend, and teammate,” the club said in a statement. “He was a joyful, kind young man who lit up every room he entered. Our entire club grieves this tragedy, and we’re thinking of and praying for his family.”
Marco Angulo’s death comes as a devastating blow to Ecuadorian football, as he was widely regarded as one of the country’s brightest young talents. A defensive midfielder, Angulo began his career at Rocafuerte before moving to the prestigious Independiente del Valle academy, where he made a name for himself. His performances earned him a call-up to the Ecuador national team, and he made his senior debut in 2022.
Angulo was part of the squad that helped FC Cincinnati win the Supporters’ Shield in 2023, and he had been loaned to Liga de Quito, where he had played 16 matches, with his final appearance just one day before the accident. Angulo’s impressive performances also earned him a place in Ecuador’s national team, earning two caps in international friendlies.
Ecuador’s national team coach, Gustavo Alfaro, had recognized his potential, and Angulo was seen as a key part of Ecuador’s future, having represented his country at various youth levels, including the U-17 and U-20 teams. His talent and work ethic had made him a cherished figure in Ecuadorian football.
