Chelsea Storm Back to Defeat Tottenham 4-3 in Thrilling London Derby
Chelsea staged a remarkable comeback to beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 in a dramatic Premier League clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday. The Blues, who found themselves 2-0 down inside the first 11 minutes, demonstrated incredible resilience and composure to secure all three points and move to second in the table, just four points behind leaders Liverpool.
Tottenham made an explosive start, capitalizing on two early mistakes by Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella. The Spaniard slipped in his own half, allowing Brennan Johnson to cross for Dominic Solanke to open the scoring in the fifth minute. Six minutes later, Dejan Kulusevski doubled Spurs’ lead with a calm finish into the bottom corner after a mazy run into the penalty box.
Chelsea quickly responded, with Jadon Sancho pulling one back in the 18th minute. The Chelsea winger picked up an assist from Cucurella, whose earlier mistakes were forgiven as he made a key contribution to the goal. Sancho’s precise shot found the bottom corner, reigniting Chelsea’s hopes.
As the match progressed, both teams had chances, but Tottenham’s early momentum seemed to fizzle out. Chelsea’s Moisés Caicedo was fortunate not to be sent off for a high challenge on Pape Matar Sarr, which went unpunished despite VAR review. This proved pivotal, as shortly after, Caicedo was fouled by Yves Bissouma, earning Chelsea a penalty in the 59th minute. Cole Palmer stepped up to confidently convert the spot-kick, leveling the score at 2-2.
The turnaround was completed in the 74th minute when Palmer played a key role again, this time providing an assist for Enzo Fernández. The Argentine midfielder lashed home a powerful half-volley to put Chelsea ahead for the first time in the match. Moments later, a careless challenge by Pape Matar Sarr on Palmer resulted in another penalty, which Palmer slotted home with a cheeky Panenka to make it 4-2.
Tottenham did pull one back late in the game, with Son Heung-min scoring in the 88th minute, but it was too little, too late for Spurs. The hosts were unable to mount a further comeback, and Chelsea held on to claim a vital victory.
Manager Enzo Maresca highlighted the importance of remaining focused and not getting carried away with thoughts of the title, urging his team to keep improving day by day.
“The mentality of the team was fantastic,” Maresca said. “To come into this stadium, against this team, and concede two early goals but continue with the same plan shows how strong we are mentally. It’s a perfect win because of the way it arrived.”
Tottenham, meanwhile, remain in 11th place, with manager Ange Postecoglou expressing frustration over the result and some controversial refereeing decisions. Spurs’ inability to hold onto leads continues to be a major issue.
Injuries also plagued Spurs, with Cristian Romero being forced off after just 15 minutes, followed by Brennan Johnson and Micky van de Ven later in the match. Despite these setbacks, Postecoglou stressed that his team must learn to be more clinical in defending their leads.
“We worked awfully hard, but giving away two penalties and two goals like that is very difficult to recover from,” Postecoglou said. “We need to improve in those areas.”
Chelsea now sit just four points behind Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, while Tottenham’s inconsistency leaves them languishing in mid-table.
