Hezbollah Rockets Strike Northern Israel in Retaliation for Airstrikes
Hezbollah, the Iran-aligned militant group, launched a barrage of rockets targeting the Israeli border town of Kiryat Shmona in response to Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon’s al-Habbariyeh village, which resulted in seven fatalities. The exchange of fire between Hezbollah and the Israeli military has been ongoing since the beginning of the conflict in Gaza, escalating tensions in the region.
According to reports, around 30 rockets were fired from Lebanon toward northern Israel on Wednesday morning. This marked a significant escalation in the conflict, as Hezbollah took responsibility for the rocket launches, citing retaliation for an Israeli airstrike on a paramedic center linked to a Lebanese Sunni Muslim group in southern Lebanon. The airstrike resulted in the deaths of seven members of the group overnight.
The situation highlights the complex web of conflicts in the Middle East, with Hezbollah being an ally of Hamas, the militant group that controls the Gaza Strip. In Kiryat Shmona, the rocket barrage resulted in at least one casualty, a 25-year-old factory worker who was killed when a rocket struck a building, causing a fire. The attack underscored the threat posed by Hezbollah’s rocket arsenal, which has the capability to reach deep into Israeli territory.
The Israeli military has responded to the rocket attacks with airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. In one such strike, Israeli forces targeted a paramedic center in al-Habbariyeh village, resulting in condemnation from Lebanon’s Ministry of Health. The airstrike was described as a violation of international laws and norms, particularly the Geneva Convention, which stresses the neutrality of health centers and workers during conflicts.
